 There are frugal living tips for students in order for them to survive college life and they are not that difficult to follow. Most of the college students have limited budget and if they know how to stretch their budget and live frugally they will still have some money to save.

I will discuss some tips on how to survive college on a budget while still enjoying it. I know, you might say how can you enjoy college when you are always squeezing your money so you can barely survive.

From board, lodging, books and food college students can live frugally and stay on a budget in order not to accumulate debts. Plus you can save more and you don't need to work extra hours if you live frugally.

Know the available college grants and scholarships available and maximize it

The most important thing or first step is for college students to maximize and know the available grants or aids for them. Know and avail of it immediately even before you actually start the semester.

Frugal living can be done whatever your circumstances as a student

College students have different circumstances, some are living in dormitories or near their parents or in other states. Whatever your case is, you can live frugally and learn from these tips here. Surviving college is an achievement everybody of us can be proud of after we graduate.

By frugal living we mean that you don't sacrifice quality of life, but you just need to stretch out your budget and keep track of your spending.

Instead of working extra hours, you can save so that you have more time to study and relax.

Frugal living for college students - make a personal budget using excel or spreadsheet

  • First about your budget - make sure that you budget your money. Make a budget plan, seat down and jot all the things you need for the whole month (say for example you receive money monthly). Put this in one column. Make a projected budget and jot down the actual expenses in one column. Subtract the difference. Jot down the expenses to the last centavo
  • Make sure that your budget plan is in place and keep a certain portion of your money and stash it away, only to be touched when there is emergency. Even if you are living frugally, you can still save some portion of your money.

Use a bike for transportation or if you use a car, use it minimally or when it is necessary

  • Make use of bike when traveling to and from other buildings in the campus or within the vicinity of the campus. Most of college students stay around the area of the school so riding a bike means you can save on transportation expenses.
  • If you have a car, use it only when it is important. Don't use your car for outing with other students or your friends.

Always avail of student discount and be aware of its availability

  • If you are a student, companies see to it that they have student discounts available for you, at restaurants, entertainment or insurance - health or car insurance. Inquire and always ready for the requirements, bring your ID anywhere you go. That is the beauty of being a student, everybody knows that you are poor, so they tend to give you more discount, maximize it.

Buy textbooks at discounted stores online and on site

  • Always search for cheaper books, anyway you are just going to use it for one semester, so go online for the cheaper books. Look at the video here for more information.
  • Be friendly, if you have more friends, they can refer you to some of their friends who have the books you might need. You can also join organizations so that yo can widen your horizon and ask friends if they can loan you books.


Do It On Your Own Personal Care and Beauty Improvement

  • For personal beauty and care, you can cut your hair and do your nails. Instead of going to a beauty parlor or paying for somebody to do it, there are simple thing you can do so that you can save money.
  • The men can also cut their own hair to save money as well.
  • You can buy clothes in thrift shop and avoid the new and trendy clothes. As long as your clothes are decent, then you are ready to go

Buy food in bulk and use grocery coupons when you can

I know some students are shy or embarrass in doing these things, but you can save a lot if you you do these - use coupons and buy foods in bulk.

  • Don't buy mineral water in small container, buy them in large containers and transfer it to small bottle, then you can bring it in school campus
  • You can cook on your own specially simple meals like noodles and prepare your own coffee.
  • Don't buy cafe or latte, just prepare in on your own when you go home to your place.
  • Stock on non perishable foods. These are easy to prepare foods like sandwiches, biscuits and cereals so that you can eat them when you are hungry and they are faster and easier to prepare. Saves you time and money.

Most of all study hard and get higher grades, so you can get discounts and save money

  • Mostly insurance car company give discount if you have high grades. O learned this form a neighbor and this is a good thing to encourage students to study more. Plus you will not pay for extra tuition fees when you need not repeat the subject.
  • Best is when you have really high good grades and then you can get scholarships.
  • When I was in college I usually check bulletin boards for funding, grants which are availbale if you write research papers etc.

Look out for the shedule in your school of cultural shows at Colleg of Music or Theater Department if there are incoming cultural shows for entertainment

If your school has a university theater or music hall, be aware of the schedule so that instead of going out with your friends for entertainment, you can enrich your cultural tastes while saving money at the same time.

The beauty of staying in campus is that you can enrich your experience watching the play, music ensemble, recital etc. for entertainment.
